English 122 & 123 have changed my perspective of myself as a writer. I came unto the class not having much writing confidence and skill. Once I was taught certain skills my confidence grew and my writing quality went up. I came into the course thinking I just want to get by and 8 months later I wish there was more class time to learn. The skills I learned did not come overnight, when you have any doubt about anything ask. This is one of the things I wish I did more often. I either said I’ll stop by Prof Miller or Drowns office tomorrow or something like that and I never ended up doing so. Even if it seems like a stupid question don’t hesitate to send them an email or go to there office to clarify it for you. Another thing I highly suggest going into ENG 122 & 123 is to give yourself time to write and read, some of the readings you are going to want to read 2 or 4 times over and if you don’t set away time to do so you will end up either not understanding it or only getting half of the picture. This will hurt you when you go to do the writing because you need to understand the readings to do so. Lastly I highly recommend that you sign up for a writing lab, It is 100% worth the 45 minutes each week. Not only does the lab help you with ENG 122 & 123 it will help you with any paper you need to write and you can earn a credit as well!

 

From what I received in feed back from Teddy and Josh I am in good shape and with some serious thought this paper can come out pretty good.  Teddy said that if I incorporated my ideas of photoogphy into the newer paper that it would turn into a well written paper because I would be expressing my self and connecting to Carr and Kelly at the same time. Josh thinks that the quotes I used are good but if I explain why I chose them more and went into more detail about them and made the connections stronger that it would flow a lot better and I agree 100% with him on that. In one paragraph Teddy says that if I bring Kelly into the equation it would tie the 3 ideas together perfectly, the three ideas are mine, Carr and Kelly’s. Teddy likes my view of the paper witch I find very important because it is what I am trying to get to. With my quotes I plan on incorporating Kelly’s , Carr’s and mine ideas and thoughts when presenting a quote. I am going to confirm that the quote I chose will fix this box. For my conclusion I want to be able to tie all my ideas together and give a brief summarization of the paper.

Technology in my life has forever made it for the worst or for the better depending on your personal opinion.Technology has also edited my young mind according to authors David Carr and Kevin Kelley, Carr who wrote “is Google making us dumber?” dives into the idea that the internet and google in particular are changing the way we read and process information. Carr who is very concerned about how this has affected him personally and how this is taking its toll on everyone else. Kelley wrote Technophilia a piece of writing about his thoughts on the rising technology age. Personally technology has definitely made a huge impact in my life and for the most part I believe they have been positive.

 

“Craftsmen have always loved their tools, birthing them in ritual, and guarding them from the uninitiated.” To me I can see a connection between craftsmen and teens today, the difference is that teens today have 1 tool and its called a smart phone

 

The most important/valuable technology in my life is photography. I say this because the ability to capture moments in time amazes me. Photography allows people to remember and share thoughts, things and people. It allows people to communicate without talking and has the ability to move people in unimaginable ways. Photographs are part of our legacy they show and prove what type of person you are. Without the ability to take snapshots in time my life would not be the same. We learn from our history and taking pictures is a huge factor of history. It gives the ability to show what actually happened and what it really was like. Pictures show what’s important to you for example if your camera roll on your iphone 7 is mostly pictures of wildlife and sunrises and sunsets you can assume the person enjoys the outdoors. If the camera roll has old pictures on it with family and friends you can see that family is a value of there’s it can be from pictures with your girlfriend to pictures with your cousins when you all took that family vacation 5 years ago. In life we take take things for granted like the ability to take pictures and record videos.  Being able to actually see these images and not have to rely on memory is special it has enough power to bring you to tears in some cases. Pictures express who you are as a person. For me personally taking photographs is not only a way I express myself I do it as a way to relax and take in the world from a different view. Photographs are a part of human history, they show life, death and everything in between. Photos show how far we have came and what the future holds for mankind

 

In “is Google making Us Stupid ?” Carr the author touches upon reading concentration and how people think in general compared to earlier times. The article also talks about the internet and how it has changed the way we do everything and where google wants to be in the future and what they are doing now to get there. The article speaks about how styles of research have changed and how the style of thinking and writing have followed. It shows how news articles don’t get read as much and the way to promote things is with pop ups and adds. Carr is concerned on how much people are changing. I believe he has a strong point in the fact that people reading attention span has gone done over the years. I believe there is good in this as well unlike Carr. Since we are able to read quicker by the way of scanning or skimming over, we are able to read more and process information quicker and in more quantity. This allows everyone to work faster and get more things done in a day. This is shown in our advancements in almost everything from technology to medicine. I believe this has bettered the world drastically. Although I do see where Carr is coming from when he speaks about how people can’t read as much or for as long compared to the pre internet days. I do think this is will and is hurting mankind’s ability to think and process information at a deeper level with a true clear definition. To me Carr is right on the ball with some of the points he brings up. I believe Carr could be forseeing the future with robots having too much brain power and possibly taking over, with googles drive to have the best AI in the world this concerns me. Since google is a private company they do no need to tell anyone what they are actually doing they can hide behind the corporate walls. I think that it is not okay at all that google is able to track just about everything we do on the internet and make profits off that, even though I am currently writing this paper on a google doc. I can personally can see google becoming too big and powerful to be able to knock down.  

I know I need to take out about all of the photography stuff I think I can run with the phone better. 

I believe that I think with the objects I need in that moment and love certain ones no matter what troubles they bring to me. My Iphone 7 I do not love in particular if I didn’t owe money on it I wouldn’t lose sleep if it broke. On the other hand I replaced the screen the day it broke because to me it makes 0 sense to be paying for something that doesn’t work at all. What I love about the iphone is what it can do for me, I don’t love the physical phone in particular but the things its able to do is what I truly love. I find this consiring because there will always be another phone for people to have and this love cycle may never end. On the other hand I love my jeep and it is irreplaceable to me, due to the memories and time spent with it unlike my Iphone this cannot be replaced.   

 

In technophilia by Kevin Kelley he touches on the point that most teens can not be separated from their phones, and if they do they legit can become physically sick and have withdrawals like any other addiction would bring. Kelley says “ Our identity with technology runs deep, to our core.” (Kelley 1).  Kelley and Carr have similar ideas when it comes to technology and the internet. Not only are they both considered about our love for the internet they are both worried about artificial intelligence. Carr believes that AI could possibly take over, Kelley said “ I don’t worry about computers getting smarter I worry about humans getting dumber.”  

 

Page 2: In this passage, Kelley talks about his lack of knowledge for cars. How growing up being a boy and not knowing how to tell the differences between car brands and styles. Once he went to go look at antique cars he was fascinated and intrigued by the car features. Kelley mentioned how the cars “snagged his soul” as he walked by them which was interesting.

Kelley speaks about his shortage of knowledge for cars. In dives into his youth and how this shaped him not knowing the small details of cars like different models and ect. Kelley once went to a antique car show and was shown the love that people have for cars .

 

PG3 Kelley speaks on how people are so in love with machines that they even have a day to celebrate them. The author also talks about how our technophilia might be our biophilia in disguise, this makes me question how strong of a anchor technophilia is.

 

PG4 Kelley dives into his thoughts abouts dams in nature. He brings up the idea the dams bring pros and cons to its ecosystem. I agree with Kelley because some dams like the Hoover Dam are known as a tourist attraction but also have negative impacts on society.  

 

PG5 Kelley talks about his love for the internet. Kelley introduces an MIT sociologist named Sherry Turkle “calls a particular specimen of technology that is revered by an individual an ‘evocative object’. Turkle is saying that humans are driven by emotion that’s caused when we attain certain technology. I agree with this but also disagree because I don’t love my phone in particular I love what it can do for me.

I agree with Carr on this. I personally have seen the differences in myself over the years. For me reading has always been a struggle for me due to my learning problems. Just being able to read 3 sentences in a row before my brain or eyes started to hurt was a big deal to me, I have always been working on one flaw of my reading skills. Jumping ahead or reading too fast has always been a huge problem for me.

I say this because I believe if you are taught how to use the internet correctly and continue to use the strategy to use it correctly I believe the internet can be a huge resource. With photography or the art of taking photos I do not believe that they are making us stupider in anyway possible. I believe photos provides expiation  and show what really happened.
